Influenced heavily by the music of the big bands, McLawler used to sneak into clubs in Indianapolis to hear Lucky Millinder's big band. She went on the road with the bandleader, and later formed the Syn-Co-Ettes. Early 1950's they are the House Band at Chicago's SAVOY CLUB and also, for two year's at Wally's Paradise, where a young student named Quincy Jones would come by and ask to sit in... This would make McLawler his early Mentor!
